Finding a Private Tutor in Bury: A Parent's Guide to Primary Tuition

By Joe, qualified teacher (QTS) ·

If you have searched for a private tutor in Bury, you will have seen page after page of tutor marketplaces, each listing hundreds of profiles. Choice is good, but it makes one question harder to answer: who is actually the right person to sit with your child every week?

I’m Joe, a fully qualified primary teacher (QTS) and SEND specialist with over nine years in the classroom. I tutor primary children at home across Bury, Ramsbottom, Turton, North Bolton and Rossendale, and online for families further afield. This guide is the advice I give parents who ask me how to choose a tutor, whether or not they end up choosing me.

Does my child need a tutor?

Most parents who get in touch describe one of these situations:

  • Losing motivation because they aren’t being stretched or challenged enough in class.
  • Working below age-related expectations and not keeping up with their peers in English or maths.
  • Quietly slipping under the radar in a large classroom and not reaching their full potential.
  • Underperforming in tests, so their marks don’t reflect what they can really do.
  • Overwhelmed with homework, which is causing stress and anxiety at home.

None of these mean anything is “wrong”. A class teacher has thirty children to think about. A tutor has one. That focused attention is usually what makes the difference.

What to look for in a primary tutor

1. A teaching qualification, not just good grades

Anyone can call themselves a tutor. A qualified teacher with QTS has been trained to teach reading, writing and maths to children, knows the national curriculum in detail, and can spot why a child is stuck rather than just re-explaining the same method louder.

2. An enhanced DBS check

Always ask. Any professional working with children should hold an enhanced DBS certificate and be happy to show you it before the first session.

3. Experience with your child’s stage

Phonics in Reception, times tables in Year 4 and reasoning papers in Year 6 are very different jobs. Ask what a tutor has taught and for how long.

4. Confidence with different learners

If your child is neurodivergent or has additional needs, look for someone with real SEND experience. As a former specialist SEND teacher, I adapt how I teach to the way each child processes information, whether that is dyslexia, ADHD, autism or simply a child who has decided they “can’t do maths”.

5. Feedback you can use

Good tuition doesn’t stay in the lesson. You should hear what was covered, how it went and what you can do at home between sessions.

Home tuition or online?

Both work. The right choice depends on your child.

Many of the families I work with in Bury and North Bolton choose face-to-face lessons at home and swap to an online session if someone is under the weather, so their child never misses a week.

How much does a private tutor cost in Bury?

Prices vary widely. Marketplace tutors locally advertise anywhere from around £20 an hour for a student tutor to £45 or more for an experienced teacher, and some specialist agencies charge far more.

My rates are simple, with no hidden fees or long-term contracts:

  • Weekly face-to-face sessions at home: £35 per hour
  • Weekly online sessions: £30 per hour
  • Small group tuition (2-6 children): £30 per hour, ideal for siblings or friends

Every session includes tailored plans, custom learning resources, progress tracking and feedback with tips for supporting your child at home. You can pay as you go or block-book monthly to secure a weekly slot.

What primary tuition with me covers

English foundations: early reading and phonics, handwriting and spelling, speaking and listening, and learning to question and interpret a text.

Maths skills: core numeracy and times tables, fractions, decimals and percentages, time and data, and the reasoning skills needed for word problems and Year 6 SATs.

Where it helps, I use approaches from my years teaching in the UK and in international schools, including the Singapore Maths method, which builds understanding step by step with visual models before moving to written methods.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Are you a qualified teacher, and do you hold an enhanced DBS certificate?
  2. How will you find out where my child is working now?
  3. How will I know whether it is working?
  4. What happens if we need to cancel or change a session?
  5. Do I have to commit to a block of lessons?

For what it’s worth, my answers are: yes and yes; with a gentle, stress-free assessment in the first sessions; through feedback after every lesson; sessions can be moved with 24 hours’ notice; and no, you can book weekly and stop whenever you like.
